I had no idea y'all would respond with such enthusiasm to slow cooker recipes (or to the idea of a layered meal). I guess I should have known since you're all so frugal, fabulous, and fun! :o) I use my slow cooker often. It's one of my favorite kitchen gadgets. This post is the first in a series of slow cooker recipes. If you have any slow cooker recipes you'd like to share, send them to mamabee@onefabulousmama.com!

I started making this layered dinner when we were just married. I had a 6 quart crock pot, far too big for only two people. I was putting a poor quality cut of steak into slow cook one morning and there was all this space leftover. I thought I'd try putting in the potatoes (I was using sweet potatoes.) and corn too. It was such a flavorful meal and so well cooked. My husband couldn't believe we walked in the door to it that night. I liked it because it wasn't just a soup or stew in the slow cooker and this led me to try lots of other meals too. I'll be posting more about that later in this series.

Now, I have a crock pot that has three interchangeable crocks in 2, 4, and 6 quarts. If I'm making this meal sans the corn, I use the 4 quart crock. If you're a smaller family, just adjust the amount of food and use a smaller crock.

Peace, B.

ps
I have a recipe coming for a whole chicken using this method!

You'll need the following ingredients to feed five folks:

5 steaks (or 1& 1/2 pounds)

1/4 cup Worchestireshire sauce
2 tablespoons tequila

1 tablespoon A 1 steak sauce
1 teaspoon garlic & pepper seasoning
(or any combination of spices or marinade you'd like, just not too much liquid!)

5 potatoes
5 ears of corn

Place steak in bottom of 6 quart slow cooker.

Mix Worchestireshire sauce, tequila, A1 sauce, and garlic & pepper seasoning (or whatever you're using for marinade) in a bowl.

Pour over steak.

Wash and wrap potatoes in foil. Place in crock pot on top of steak.

Shuck, wash, and wrap corn in foil. Place in crock pot on top of potatoes.

Set on high for 6 hours or low for 8.

Easy peasy, right?

Hi Momma Bee!
I am going to try this asap!!! What do you suggest to use in place of the tequila?
Thanks,

Thanks, Debra! I'd use a juice... Try apple. Or red wine. Really whatever you have or whatever you like. That's just what I use sometimes. The family likes it lots.

I am cooking this now. Do you poke holes in your baked potatoes? I didn't but read somewhere that they may explode? Do you poke holes in your potatoes?

You can poke holes in the potatoes.

Beth

I lived on the dangerous side and didn't poke them. ;) Guess what? I lived to tell about it! LOL The meal was a HUGE hit and I bought some very cheap pieces of meat so I was very impressed. And I also made some wheat bread in my bread machine! Thanks for all your wonderful recipes, frugal tips, and the laughs. :)

Wendy, they may explode in the microwave, but not a slow cooker.

MamaBee: EXCELLENT idea. Just what I needed, too. I have too many sweet taters and what hasn't been consumed, must be slow cooked! (I know, I'm cooky, but hey, I show up as me... LOL)

I guess it doesn't matter how thin or thick the steak just stack them as long as all will fit?

Yep! Just stack 'em and go, friend.
