I'm missing home something fierce this week with Mardi Gras happening. If we were back in Mobile, the kids would be out of school and we'd be in the thick of things downtown with a band and a picnic for Joe Cain Day! Our Teenager has the faintest memories of Mardi Gras while the middle-Little remembers nothing. The little-Little is Georgia born and raised and has never been back home for a Mardi Gras celebration. We spent a little time talking about the festivities and history of Mardi Gras this year and we topped it off with this king cake today. Using my recipe for plain white bread in the bread machine, this recipe is so easy and so yummy good, I can't believe I didn't think of it years ago! Enjoy! Peace, B.

Place the following ingredients in a bread machine pan in this order:
one and 1/2 cup water
two tablespoons softened butter
four cups bread flour
three tablespoons powdered milk
two tablespoons sugar
two teaspoons salt
one and 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast

Select dough cycle and let the bread machine do its work!

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Set the dough on a lightly floured surface and roll it into a 9 X 11 rectangle. Brush with two tablespoons melted butter. Mix together 1/4 cup sugar with one tablespoon cinnamon. Sprinkle over melted butter. Starting at the long end opf the bread, tightly roll into a tube. Shape the tube into an oval, ends barely touching, and place on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake for 30 minutes.
Let cool. Tuck a plastic baby inside by pushing it in from the bottom.
Frost cake with a glaze by mixing one cup powdered sugar and a few drops of milk together until smooth. Sprinkle with yellow, purple, and green colored sugar. It's traditional to do this is sections, so you'll have a section of yellow, one of green, and one of purple.

Easy peasy!

Will this work if your bread machine also bakes the bread?

No, friend. You have to roll the cinnamon mixture up in the dough. If you bake it, you'll just have a loaf of white bread.
